South Sulawesi APINDO: Layoff Task Force Not Yet a Priority for the Regions

South Sulawesi APINDO: Layoff Task Force Not Yet a Priority for the Regions

MAKASSAR – The government is planning to establish a special task force to address the potential wave of layoffs (PHK). The proposal has sparked debate among stakeholders, including within the business community.

The proposed task force was suggested during an economic forum attended by representatives of labor unions and national business actors. Its primary goal would be to monitor and prevent mass layoffs. However, many business leaders argue that the initiative may be ineffective, citing the existing role of institutions like the Tripartite Cooperation Institution (LKS Tripartit) in managing industrial relations.

Chairman of the South Sulawesi branch of the Indonesian Employers' Association (APINDO), Drs. Suhardi, M.Si., stated that a layoff task force is not currently necessary at the regional level. “We already have an established and active Tripartite Cooperation Institution. Especially in the regions, there hasn’t been a significant wave of layoffs,” Suhardi said during a live interview on the interactive dialogue program Makassar Pagi Ini on Pro 1 RRI Makassar, Monday (April 14, 2025).

According to Suhardi, employers resort to layoffs only as a last measure. “Layoffs are the final option, taken when all efficiency efforts have been exhausted,” he said.

He emphasized the need for stronger government support to improve the business climate as a preventive measure against layoffs. Meanwhile, recent data from various sources reported that at least 11,000 workers have been laid off throughout 2025. Labor unions see this number as concerning and argue for increased monitoring. However, business representatives are calling for a more constructive approach.

Suhardi urged the government to also consider the business sector's perspective. “If the aim is to prevent layoffs, then first help the businesses survive. Layoffs don’t happen because employers are evil, but because of overwhelming pressure,” he remarked.

The formation of the task force is still awaiting an official directive from the President. Amid the ongoing debate, the public is watching closely to see whether this initiative will serve as a solution or become an additional burden for businesses.
